Stumbling Stone project -- One artist [Gunter Demnig] started the project to put these bronze markers all over Europe to memorialize places where Jews were known to live - read them. There are 10339 of them in Berlin alone. Here is a link to the Berlin project and this to the Wikipedia writeup . It has been expanded to include Roma and Sinti and many other groups of people persecuted by the Nazis.
